About the Artist
"I was six when I saw that everything was God, and my hair stood up, and all... My sister was a tiny child then, and she was drinking her milk, and all of a sudden I saw that she was God and the milk was God. I mean, all she was doing was pouring God into God, if you know what I mean." -Teddy, in 'Teddy' by JD Salinger
I reinvented myself in 2025. I was thinking about Morandi, I was thinking about Van Gogh's wheat fields and cypress trees, and I was thinking about Cézanne apples and what Barnett Newman said about them (they're not apples, they're cannonballs!).
When you make a painting you're taking part in a 15,000+ year tradition of communicating visually by spreading colored mud on a surface. This can't be ignored; the dirt is important. But really what you're doing is trying to translate your experience of moving through 4D spacetime onto a 2.1ish-dimensional surface that will ideally long outlive you. This is not to be taken lightly. When you paint from life, you stare at something for hours on end, trying both to make sense of its very existence but also to record the heart of it in a way that illuminates its glory for others to see. Because capital-A Art – painting, music, dance, whatever – is at the end of the day, in addition to everything else it is, a description of the ineffable. An attempt, as Douglas Adams said, to eff it after all.
